4 Power Tips for Better Candidate Search Results

Posted: March 29th, 2010 | Author: | Filed under: Welcome | No Comments »

We spend a lot of time researching the keyword search terms they use when sourcing candidates.  We analyze our own search logs, google analytics and the overall search space.  Below are 5 ways you can improve your search results instantly!  These can be applied whether you are searching on Monster, Google or Climber.com

  1. Use Negative Keywords – When negative keywords are used you shrink the total set of results and allow you to focus on the results that are more targeted to your needs.  By eliminating thousands of pages,  allow you to dig deeper into the result pages where fewer recruiters will ever land.
  2. Think Like a Candidate – Candidate describe their skills in non-clinical ways, only on their resume are they so articulate.  They also talk use words in the past tense as they describe the things that they have done.  There is a large movement online to semantic search, this is exactly how it applies in the recruiting industry.
  3. Use Site:Search.com:  This enables you to conduct searches limited to a particular domain.  For example, site:climber.com will limit your results to only those that satisfy your query and appear on that domain.   You can use this strategy for sourcing candidate on LinkedIn.
  4. Use Intitle:resume and Inurl:CV: If you are not using this when search on Google you are missing out on some great free candidatesMany candidates have their resumes online, Climber.com actually builds online resumes for candidates so that they can be found in Google.  Recruiter will string dozens of these together to get a highly refined target set of candidates.

We are proud to announce a new tool for recruiters that enables them to invite candidates to network with them on LinkedIn. “It seemed counter intuitive at first, I was wondering why Climber.com would allow me to build my LinkedIn network with their candidates,” stated Mike Villareal a recruiter who hires for Google, “then Matt (Matt O’Brien Climber.com’s National Sales Director) explained that it is Climber’s goal to match candidates to recruiters on their preferred platform.”

Climber.com’s new tool reflects the company’s continuing commitment to open recruiting. “Unlike Monster, CareerBuilder and theLadders which are closed networks, Climber.com’s effort is to showcase our candidates through all methods available, Google, Twitter, LinkedIn, RSS etc.” Stated Nicholas Jimenez, Climber.com EVP.

Are Job Search Expenses Tax Deductible?

Posted: February 3rd, 2010 | Author: | Filed under: Updates | Tags: , | No Comments »

Over the last few months Climber.com has been asked this question dozens of times.  The good news is in most cases yes, so tell your candidates to keep their receipts and don’t be afraid to spend some money on a resume makeover or marketing themselves.

According to H&R Block your job search expenses are deductible if :

* You look for a job in the same field.
* You are looking for a job at a similar level to your most recent job.
* The total of all of your miscellaneous itemized deductions is more than 2% of your over Adjusted Gross Income.

Aaron Garabedian from The Garabedian Group, an accounting and consulting firm in Fresno, CA, explained it in plain English, “For instance if have been out of work for six months and your total adjusted gross income for the year is $25,000, you would need your total miscellaneous itemized deductions to be more than $500.  This is the total of all miscellaneous deductions not just job search related, some other miscellaneous itemized deductions are professional or union dues, work tools, protective work clothing and tax preparation fees.” might be mortgage interest or property taxes.

Here are the items that you can generally deduct:

* Employment agency fees (like
Climber.com ):  If your fees are repaid by an employer in a later tax year you will have to declare the reimbursement as income.

* Resume Preparation – Marketing: Printing, postage, advertising and other fees associated with creation and distribution of your resume.

* Travel:  non-reimbursed airfare, automobile mileage, meals and lodging are all covered.
